In this last segment of our interview with Sandy Komito, he explains that his total for 1998 is 748 species, rather than 745, as is widely published…including in his own book. And no, it has nothing to do with splits.

This is particularly significant now, as John Vanderpoel tied Bob Ake for the second highest ABA Big Year ever with #731 yesterday: Gray Partridge. He has 18 species to go, and about 50 days left to beat Komito’s record.
